Payment Processor Expectations & Limitations

Payment Processor Expectations & Limitations

When it comes to accepting payments through your website, choosing the right payment processor is important. But understanding when and how to connect it is just as critical.

This article outlines what you're responsible for, what our role is, and what we recommend based on real-world client experience.

What You're Responsible For

Once your website has been approved and transferred to your Wix account, you will have full control to connect your preferred payment processor or processors.

This connection must be completed by you. For both security and liability reasons, we cannot connect or configure any payment processors on your behalf.

Connecting a payment processor typically requires access to sensitive business and banking information. To protect your data, this step must remain fully in your control.

You will also need to create an account with any payment processor you plan to use. Once your account is active and approved, you can easily connect it in just a few clicks.

Our Recommendation: Use More Than One

We strongly recommend setting up at least two payment processors. Here’s why:

  • Redundancy: If one service goes down, the other is still active

  • Flexibility: Gives your customers more payment options

  • Business continuity: If your relationship with a provider breaks down (delays, freezes, disputes), you can pivot instantly

Payment Processor Comparisons

Here’s what we’ve learned after working with thousands of clients across different platforms.

Stripe
Fast setup, reliable performance, and rarely asks for follow-up documentation after approval.

PayPal
Universally recognized and trusted. Works well alongside Stripe and offers minimal setup complexity.

Square
Popular, but many clients report sudden documentation demands, payout holds, or account freezes without warning. Support can also be slower to respond compared to other platforms.
